About us

Since its founding in 1972, the Wiener Urtext Edition has, with its superbly researched and prepared editions, made a name for itself as a forward-looking publisher of scholarly and informative urtext performing editions.

Appreciated by musicians, educators, scholars and amateurs alike, the Wiener Urtext Edition has a wellestablished reputation of vouching for a reliable urtext, with a catalogue that meanwhile comprises the major works of classical music ranging from the Baroque period to the early 20th century.

The Wiener Urtext Edition is a critical musicological edition for practical use and is distinguished from many other Urtext editions by comprehensive textual information in German and English and partly also in French.
The musical text itself is prepared on the basis of precise examination of all sources by renowned musicologists. Well-known musicians and pedagogues contribute fingerings.

Products and services

We present at our stand the most recent publications of the Wiener Urtext Edition. The original focus on keyboard music has broadened in the course of time to include literature for winds and strings In addition to finding new material to incorporate into its program, the Wiener Urtext Edition accords high priority to the educational idea of introducing young musicians to authentic music-making.

Our Highlight in 2017 is the worldwide first Urtext Edition of Béla Bartók’s Mikrokosmos.  One can hardly overestimate the pedagogical and historical importance of this work first published in 1940. With its total of 153 pieces the work is not only an impressive collection of progressive piano pieces (thus its subtitle), but, as a compendium that has remained unique in its kind, also forms a comprehensive introduction to the music of the first half of the 20th century, both in terms of compositional technique and style – from the very first piano lessons right up to concert repertoire.

W.A. Mozart, Piano sonata A-Major, KV331

W.A. Mozart, Piano sonata A-Major, KV331

The sonata in A Major (KV 331) is among the most popular of all Mozart's piano sonatas. KV 331 with its famous variation movement and the renowned 'Rondo alla turca' is one of the most popular works of the whole Viennese classical period.
This edition is based on the first print and the fragments of Mozart’s autograph manuscript including the four pages re-discovered in the Hungarian National Library in 2014. The score is clearly and well laid out, with page turns in convenient places.
