About us

Musicians throughout the world are excited about our blue Urtext editions – top quality editions of great classical compositions. We also publish complete editions of the works of various composers, musicological literature and catalogues as well as facsimile editions.
More than 80% of our editions are exported.

Urtext and Henle are synonymous, however the term “Urtext” has been debated ever since it was first used. Yet the idea behind it is simple: the musician is offered a musical text which reflects the composer’s intentions. As market leader our catalogue lists over 1.000 “Urtext” editions.

Henle’s quality standards:

  • authoritative musical text
  • markings for practical use
  • superb engraving
  • preface in three languages (German, English, French)
  • critical commentary in two languages (German, English)
  • durability (paper, binding)

Excellent editions coupled with the best possible customer service – the key to Henle’s success are the people who work for us every day.

Mozart Piano Sonatas Volume I

Mozart Piano Sonatas Volume I

When Günter Henle founded his Urtext publishing house in 1948, the first work in the catalogue was the two volume edition of all of Mozart’s piano sonatas. Even today they still bear our numbers HN 1 and HN 2. Over the years both of the volumes have been revised several times so that the musical text always reflects the latest in scholarly research.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Violin Sonatas, Volume I

Ludwig van Beethoven: Violin Sonatas, Volume I

Claude Debussy: Première Rhapsodie and Petite Pièce for Clarinet and Piano

Claude Debussy: Première Rhapsodie and Petite Pièce for Clarinet and Piano

Originally written for the final year clarinet examination at the Paris Conservatoire, Debussy’s “Première Rhapsodie” has quickly become a bestseller of the clarinet repertoire, being a highly impressionistic work that plays marvellously with the timbral possibilities of the clarinet. Our edition also contains as a “lollipop” the popular “Petite pièce”, an original work of under forty bars that was in fact devised as a sight-reading test.
