Shostakovich's famous Symphony No. 5 - based on the New Complete Edition, newly perused and improved, tested and approved in orchestral practice.
This march was written at the instigation of Gennady Rozhdestvensky as an encore for a concert in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on 15 April 1982, at which Edison Denisov's "Peinture", Sofia Gubaidulina's "Offertorium" and Alfred Schnittke's "Gogol Suite" were performed. It was used by Schnittke as an introduction and finale of his ballet "Sketches" in 1985.
Khachaturian wrote his brilliant C major Sonatina in 1959 and dedicated it to pupils of the Elementary Music School in Prokopyevsk. Its modest structures and aspirations should not hide from us the fact that it is extraordinarily effective as a concert display piece and contains more than its fair share of humour and lyricism too. In sum, the Sonatina is a work not to miss!
