About us

Carus-Verlag was founded in 1972 with the aim of
publishing editions of previously unpublished works of
sacred choral music, works out of print or works in
older editions which did not conform to the standards
of modern editorial practice. In pursuing its goal of
continually expanding the repertoire available to choirs,
Carus has become a leading publisher of sacred music
worldwide. The catalog contains more than 25.000
editions.
Carus – Urtext
The aim of Carus Urtext editions is to provide a reliable
music text, cleansed of the additions of later centuries.
The editions are developed according to current
musicological standards, taking into account all of the
known sources, with the objective of most closely
realizing the composer’s intention. The foreword offers
performers important information concerning the work
and its genesis as well as suggestions for
performance.

Choral Collection Beethoven

The performance of Beethoven's choral-symphonic works is hugely demanding for many choirs. For the major Beethoven anniversary in 2020 Carus is therefore expanding the repertoire of works available for mixed choirs. The Choral Collection Beethoven contains attractive arrangements of Beethoven’s music from three centuries. Contents include the choral-symphonic repertoire in versions with piano accompaniment, some lesser-known unaccompanied works, and some seldom-performed works.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - The First Walpurgis Night. A Poem by Goethe

Goethe’s dramatic ballad The First Walpurgis Night inspired Mendelssohn to write a magnificent and vivid portrayal of the conflict between an old heathen community and the new aspirations of Christianization, between belief and superstition on both sides. The Carus edition by the leading Mendelssohn scholar R. Larry Todd is based on the first printed edition of the score and thus the last authentic version of the work.

Georg Friedrich Händel - Utrecht Te Deum

Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum enthralled London audiences right from its first performance, and it continues to do so today all over the world. It was performed for the first time to celebrate the Peace marking the end of the twelve year-long War of the Spanish Succession in 1713. The Te Deum was the first commission by the English royal house and was also Handel’s first sacred work in the English language. For this work Carus offers a musical text reflecting the latest scholarly discoveries.
